Multicultural Education:  the Role of the School

Picture
In order for multicultural education to be realized, it must be a school-wide effort. The classroom teacher will not be capable of affecting true change without support. At the school level, merely acknowledging and accepting diversity is not enough. The role of the school, and the school system, is to manage diversity. Managing diversity means understanding the diverse aspects of the student population; being sensitive to the needs of all students; incorporating those needs into the mission of the schools; and creating an atmosphere which values, and actively seeks to meet the needs of all students. Rosado states that a school cannot be truly multicultural unless its "5 P's" :  perspectives, policies, programs, personnel, and  practices, meet those criteria.
